The long-awaited opening of the Christmas markets began right along with the first snow and the start of the Advent season. After the wonderful debut of our Christmas Market in 2019, followed by a pandemic-induced two year pause, we were especially looking forward to our second Unicorn Christmas Market this year. Then, on December 4th, 2022, the time had finally arrived – and we opened the doors of our Unicorn Village premises in Berlin-Rixdorf for visitors. It was a special time we spent together, and we’d like to share some highlights of the event here in a little review.
The Unicorn Christmas Market – facts & figures:
- 14 stands for our visitors to enjoy at the Christmas market
- 1,100€ in donations raised with our prize wheel for the Unicorn Refugee Relief
- 110 liters of mulled wine merrily consumed by everyone together
14 stands und 160 liters of mulled wine: what awaited our visitors
Warmly dressed and armed for the cold weather with mulled wine, punch and egg nog, we kicked off our Christmas market on a very wintry Advent Sunday at 3 pm. Along with some great Berlin companies and artists, such as House of Scrunchies, Hong Le, Catoons, Midori Keramik, Familiar Faces and Twin Teaks Berlin, we set up 14 stands featuring everything from illustrations, pottery and puzzles to wooden chopping boards and hard liquors – providing plenty of opportunities to find a great gift for someone special or perhaps a little treat for yourself. We had two stands at the market: one with mulled wine, punch and egg nog, as well as one with our wheel of fortune.
Our small, but nice little market was open on the same day as the traditional Rixdorf Christmas Market was having its last day. Apparently, word had gotten around among the Berliners about our market, and we were deluged with visitors curious to check out this insider’s tip, wondering what lies hidden in the glittering inner courtyard. Then shortly thereafter, just about 1 ½ hours later, we ran out of mulled wine! Fortunately, our Unicorn heroes managed to quickly replenish the supply and so kept the mulled wine flowing for the rest of the event. Thanks to everyone who came to celebrate with us, it was so nice to have such a great turnout for our market!
“A Christmas for the soul” and 1,100€ raised for our Unicorn Refugee Relief
We’re especially pleased to announce that with our Unicorn prize wheel and the sale of mulled wine, punch and egg nog, we were able to raise a total of 1,100€ for the Unicorn Refugee Relief. At our prize wheel, a ticket could be purchased in exchange for a small donation, with a chance at winning prizes such as delicious Berliner Knalle Popcorn or a Unicorn Goodie Bag. All proceeds from the prize wheel have gone to our Unicorn Refugee Relief.
The Refugee Relief is a collection campaign project that we initiated in the beginning of 2022, primarily to collect donated items and distribute them to refugees. The linchpin of our project is the physical location of our Unicorn Refugee Relief in the Unicorn Village in Neukölln, where donations can be dropped off and are then prepared to be given to refugees free of charge. In particular, we collect items which refugees need here for everyday life, such as: kitchen accessories, clothing, home furnishings and pet supplies. You can find out more information about our efforts here. We’d also like to take the opportunity now to once again thank everyone who has donated to the Unicorn Refugee Relief, and we’re looking forward to more donations in the future to continue aiding refugees.
We’d like to end this blog article with the words of our dear New Work expert, Renate. She wrote to us after the Christmas market to say it was like “a Christmas for the soul”. That describes it perfectly well for us, too.
We hope that everyone has had a great holiday season and yes, we’re already looking forward to next year with you all!
